Chavez (SNES title)

“Chavez” is in a losing battle with its first moments, in which the worst picture of Julio César Chávez is processed through the uncanny valley. The boxing is rudimentary, bordering on bad, but that opening screen will haunt me to my dying day. His smile, his eyes, they’re everywhere and nowhere, they’re post-ironical syntax of regurgitation or something like that. It is madness, the sort of monstrosity more appropriate for Lovecraft or Geiger than simulated sports. Perhaps I can get good with the actual game, maybe there’s something to it, but that means getting past that screen, and who can?
