Better Off Dead

There’s so much here I’d imagine most modern audiences would react poorly to, between the casual racism, running gags about self-harm, and a young Dan Schneider (yes, THAT Dan Schneider) spending far too much time making googly-eyes at a young woman. BOD posits itself as a surrealist black comedy, but it also nibbles the table scraps of John Hughes films, so it proceeds like a typical 80s teen film for a while, then somebody’s mother will blow up, then a synth-pop tune plays and everyone dances. This ain’t no classic, but there’s far less amusing (and more offensive) 80s “classics”.
