Contra (arcade version) (version found in the Switch port of the Contra Anniversary Collection played for review)

The greatest compliment one can give to the original “Contra” is how the many amenities introduced in the NES port make that version shine by comparison. The presentation here does this game no favors (no rewind or option to curb the slowdown? Seriously? I’m positive these features can be accessed through emulators), but at its core is an ugly, soulless shooter that doesn’t even afford a customer with bottomless pockets unlimited continues. It’s all so unappealing and considerable work to get through, especially through a modern lens, and I’d encourage anyone who hasn’t played it to remain in ignorant bliss.
