Free Solo
Most documentaries focused around feats that shatter our perception of what a person can accomplish aim to make you feel inspired. “Free Solo”, however, leaves you bewildered and unsettled that people like Alex Honnold exist, a man of few words that partially justifies his wish to climb El Capitan sans ropes with a dressed-up version of “well, I’m going to die sometime, anyway”. Even the people behind the camera get their two cents in, becoming audience avatars as they privately hope Honnold comes to his senses. The well-deserving winner of the Academy Award for Best Documentary in a stacked year.
