Friday the 13th (1980 film)

The most shocking part of “Friday the 13th” to someone who waited until 2023 to watch it is how little there is to this film. Cultural osmosis had hinted it follows teenagers getting picked off one by one as they get closer to unraveling the mystery of what happened to Jason, but no, they just have sex and play Monopoly and wait to get picked off, then the plot gets explained fifteen minutes before the credits. Savini’s makeup work is impressive, but similar low-budget retro slashers “Evil Dead” and “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” lap this in terms of artistic merit.
