Jojo Rabbit
I know “Jojo Rabbit” is going for resonance through dissonance, with zany comedy breaking up the bleak drama, but I think I would have liked this more if it committed to a tone. It’s hardly a comedy anyway—most of the good jokes are in the ads and trailers, and the comic atmosphere that informed Taika Waititi’s past work, save his turn as Jojo’s imaginary best friend Hitler, is surprisingly muted. The drama, meanwhile, works out well; you’ll chart the path a mile off, but the principle players do their damnedest to elevate the material. Good, but far from great.
