Matilda: The Musical (2022 film)

Film musicals are on a bit of an upswing following the critical and commercial successes of the likes of “Belle”, “Encanto”, and “A Star is Born”. “Matilda: The Musical: The Film” feels not of this current movement but of the glut of mediocre 90s musicals that practically killed the genre; one might call this a throwback. It alternates between being irritating and boring, with its best songs being merely bad and the worst song being the opening number that begins with tuneless adolescents singing about existing. Weir’s revelatory performance is a rare praiseworthy element in this aggravating and forgettable garbage.
