Mega Man 8
“8” doesn’t want to play to the strengths of its franchise. Mega Man is at its best with tight controls, a loose storyline, and brief levels. “8” controls a bit floaty, the story has proper (terrible) cutscenes, and the levels tend to go on longer than they should (the schmup sections and nods to “Battletoads” don’t help). This batch of robot masters isn’t the worst, but, well, Capcom resorted to putting in Sword Man and Clown Man. “8” is far from incompetent and even enjoyable in spots, but the “X” games were killing it on the Playstation around its time.
