Moonstruck

"Moonstruck" is best known these days as the film that got Cher an Academy Award, but she's not the only reason this thing works. Her affair with her fiance's brother is one of a handful of yarns spun over the course of a bright night, all commentary on each other, all sharply written, all breakingly human. This is a tight hundred minutes with a quotable line every two minutes and enough comic absurdism that I had to check to make sure this wasn't a stealth adaptation of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" (c'mon, there's even a play the characters comment on).
