Mulan (1998 film)
Is there a project from Disney's 90s animated renaissance that isn't some degree of a mess? "Mulan" is less of a mess than its two most easily comparable peers (in terms of tone, anyway) "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" and "Hercules", but it lacks the ambition of the former and the likeability of the latter, leaving me feeling that it's good when it needed to be great. It's still good, though, owing to its catchy songs, at-times inspired visuals, and one of the boldest "send out the clowns" moments of all Disney films. A fine way to spend ninety minutes.
