Parallel Mothers

The ingredients for a great film are here, from a cast that can make the phone book seem compelling to conveying strong messages and imagery about generational pain, but the final product is on the low end of good. Keeping things subdued isn’t necessarily a bad choice, but at two hours and with no proper emotional climax, I found it hard to remain engaged near the end. Perhaps the ending hits harder for some audiences, but I felt it could have been improved if its imagery and the film’s primary storyline were more explicitly linked. A strongly performed soap opera.
