Promising Young Woman
It’s tempting to want to root for oddball Best Picture nominated films (and yes, “revenge fantasy against predators played as dramedy” counts as oddball for the Academy), but PYW’s love of blunt overstatement grew tiresome for me quickly. Bits of the filmmaking hinted at a project I could appreciate, Mulligan was great as usual, and I liked the ending, but between the indelicate presentation that registered as using a sledgehammer to hit an anvil that’s on top of twenty anvils and the annoying supporting cast, I find it hard to recommend this. Still better than the actual Best Picture winner.
