Raw (2016 film)

The biggest frustration I had with “Raw”, a fantastic first feature from future Palme d’Or winner Julia Ducournau, comes with the occasional fumbles of its metaphor. It accomplishes so much with its narrative, enough to justify body horror that’s both stomach-churning and far less extreme than you’d imagine if the film’s main conceit was spoiled for you, that the missives about college life feel extraneous in a film that, at slightly over ninety minutes, otherwise feels cut to the bone. If you’re in the mood for horror films that caused medical incidents at their premieres, “Raw” is better than most.
