RoboCop (1987 film)

Virtually perfect save for its "muted" action sequences, in which RoboCop is never in meaningful danger. Aside from that, satire doesn’t get more pointed or gonzo as this outside the arthouse. Unlike “Starship Troopers”, this ultraviolence easily reads as pointed commentary and dark comedy, and if you’re not willing to engage its headier concepts, every other line is quotable and every frame is soaked in 80’s retro-future shlock, making for a film you can laugh with and at in equal measure. Even the serious drama of the title character’s personal journey lands well in this madness. Arguably Verhoeven’s best work.
