Say Anything… (1989 film)

Plenty of great films about teenagers have tackled several aspects of the process of growing up, but in terms of succeeding in conveying an effective romance, treating its leads with unironic respect, and being damn funny on top of everything else, the closest “Say Anything…” has to a competitive peer is “The Spectacular Now”. I’m of the opinion that too many celebrated 80s comedies aren’t half as interesting or great as our parents have made them out to be (do not get me started on “Animal House”), but there’s undeniable magic going on in this gem. My favorite romantic comedy.
