Shrek (2001 film)

The film that saved fairy tale stories by lowering the bar. It is what is on the inside that counts, don’t be selfish, and don’t be afraid to fall in love. Isn’t “Shrek” so subversive? Oh, but I can’t discount those dick jokes, those are so necessary. This is formula dressed up as radicalism—you’d think the use of Smash Mouth would have given up the ghost. Dressed up with more pop culture references than a Dennis Miller joke, “Shrek” exists to be bought and invested in, not deconstructed as art. And this won an Academy Award? Buzz off forever.
