The King of Staten Island

For the many issues that weigh down Apatow’s latest—its dry humor missing more than it hits, the cinematography occasionally suggesting a more interesting film than this, the captured symbolism being too obvious for children, and its gargantuan length—the worst is Pete Davidson as the lead. The rest of the cast (including Machine Gun Kelly, a rapper who has taken to aping Blink-182) have an easy finding the groove of the material, but Davidson never finds the script’s heart and the film flounders for his shortcomings. “Island”, at times, flirts with being interesting but never threatens to become compelling.
