Yoshi’s Story

“Yoshi’s Story” is not bad because it is easy—it is clearly banking hard on being charming above delivering thrills through difficulty. No, it’s bad because it isn’t charming, a plain collect-a-thon platformer that attempts to use its aesthetic to enchant the audience when too many games of its time knew how to engender goodwill through gameplay instead of suggesting I might have been into this if I was four years old. Even “Mischief Makers”, though imperfect, utilized many of the same gameplay and aesthetic elements with far better results. Just another boring N64 game with an inexplicable cult following.
