Adam Cole vs. Johnny Gargano for the vacant NXT Championship (Best Two Out of Three Falls), from WWE NXT TakeOver: New York

If every other match on this show were terrible, this show would still be worth watching on the strength of just this match. Cole and Gargano are masters at building matches to climaxes that shouldn’t work on the page—there are so many points throughout the match, including halfway in, where it could have ended and the audience would have been satisfied. That they were able to keep the audience rapt for the whole half-hour comes from not taking any shortcuts or stalling. This is a NJPW main event without the first ten minutes of rest holds. Could’ve closed WrestleMania.
