Rewatching Devolver’s past showcases clarified that I remain susceptible to its main joke, of this superindie publisher engaging in greedy schemes that would represent corporate suicide if they went through with them. I did that because I was lukewarm towards this presentation, going in hard on its special guest and cramming a lot of jokes in the dialogue, discarding so much of the cinematic panache that still informed the weakest of previous entries. A few barbs sting, but this felt incredibly tame, as though all the actual hobnobbing has reduced their edge as they’re afraid of actually upsetting other companies.
