Holy Spider
I don’t think I would have responded as hard to this film if its merits were as simple as “the violence looks good and I believe this country is conservative enough to regard the killer as a vigilante”. At every point, whether highlighting the corruption in the police department or focusing on the burst blood vessels in the eyes of a strangulation victim (I truly cannot undersell how nightmarish the violence is), “Holy Spider” forces you to consider how we got to this point, how much has gone wrong, and how much worse it could get. An unsettling, underrated gem.
