Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

It isn’t impossible for a director best known for intense personal dramas to make an outstanding martial arts film—Park Chan-wook’s “Oldboy” springs to mind. With “Shang-Chi”, however, Cretton’s talents as a filmmaker are muted in favor of action that features as much CG as a Pixar film, in a genre renowned for breathtaking yet practical spectacle. Actors best known for their work in groundbreaking masterpieces show up but are given little to chew on; Leung acquits himself well as the antagonist, but Yeoh mostly relays exposition. Silly, stupid, and also, somehow, too serious. On par with “Wonder Woman 84”.
