The Dirties
There’s about twenty bad “found footage” films for every one worth watching, but the few that get it right are worth seeking out. “The Dirties” uses its format marvelously and thoughtfully, conveying its comic tragedy with such an unerring degree of verisimilitudinous, I’ve no doubt some, fearing they were tricked into watching a snuff film, would quit halfway through. For as heavy as the subject matter is, though, it is worth noting, between its rapid pacing and disarming punchlines, the film always remains watchable. “Rec” remains the standard of found footage films I’ve seen, but this is a close second.
