The Farewell

This is classified as a comedy-drama for reasons beyond human comprehension—there are maybe five jokes in the film and the rest of it made me want to claw my eyes out. (Perhaps I should have taken some time to watch a film about someone trying to maintain a convincing smile as they interact with a beloved, dying relative.) “The Farewell” is short on dramatic tension and plot points to the point that this might’ve been stronger as a short film, but engaging performances and carefully crafted cinematography make it easy to stay invested in this tearjerker to the end.
