The Father (2021 film)
Complaints first: “The Father” has the atmosphere of “betting on the writing and acting above all else” many films made by rookie directors adapting their plays have, and the strings in the soundtrack took away from pivotal emotional moments. Beyond that, this was stunning, Hopkins doing a magnificent job of conveying a complicated figure with a difficult condition and Colman being almost as good portraying his beleaguered daughter. A nonlinear narrative combined with irregular actors and spontaneous wardrobe and scenery changes thrust you into this charming jerk’s headspace for its duration. A beautiful film I never want to watch again.
