The Favourite

Period pieces that depict events prior to 1930 need to excel in so many areas to have a chance at capturing the average viewer’s curiosity, and the ovation Olivia Colman received for winning an Academy Award on the strength of her performance in “The Favourite” is perhaps the greatest proof of its successes. It’s a beautifully shot, deeply funny drama about two nests of vipers that accidentally groom someone to become a nest of vipers, but for all of what it accomplishes so well on the technical side, this is the Colman show through and through. Also, loved the ending.
