The Fly (1986 film)

Much of what’s been deified about “classic” horror steers away from what “The Fly” aims to convey; “The Exorcist” and “The Shining”, for as incredible as they are, work well enough with traditional storytelling cues that they could have worked as straight drama. Cronenberg’s version of “The Fly”, however, couldn’t work as anything besides horror, utilizing nightmarish imagery with personable human drama in service of a stellar tragedy soaked with allegory. Goldblum not being recognized by the Academy for his work remains an embarrassing snub, and Davis is almost as good. An incredible experience provided you’ve the stomach for it.
