Midsommar
“Midsommar”, one of the best films of 2019, is ultimately something of a disappointment because it isn’t as powerful as Ari Aster’s previous “Hereditary”, which is kind of like comparing “In the Bedroom” to “Cabin Fever” but here we are. Where “Hereditary” was about grief, “Midsommar” is about rebirth, or about as much about rebirth as a horror film with a sizable body count can be. This comedy of bad decisions would likely have fallen apart if Florence Pugh weren’t as good as she is at affecting strength and contentment through a stiff frown. Messed up, hysterical, and strangely heartwarming.
