Puella Magi Madoka Magica

I finished my initial watch of this show months ago and not a day has passed without some aspect of it occupying my thoughts. Drawing from both classic literature and post-modernist thinking, SHAFT have created a story for the ages and disguised it as a cute anime for little girls. What might look like a “Sailor Moon” knockoff on first glance gives way to heartbreaking drama, intensive character study, wildly experimental animation, and ruminations on human nature. To compare “Puella Magi Madoka Magica” to “Breaking Bad” does neither a disservice. One of the best television shows of the 21st century.
