This Is Not a Burial, It’s a Resurrection
Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese’s commitment to style and mood cannot be understated. “Resurrection” begins in a place of powerful understatement and never really lets up, and I have a lot of appreciation for that. The problem is that’s almost all the film has going for it, and while I respond well to strong tableaus, two hours of such material becomes exhausting without reward. The recent “Identifying Features” contains many of “Resurrection”’s positives but with much more consideration for defined purpose and payoff, and the result was an outstanding feature. As it is, “Resurrection” is a project I respect but don’t like.
